My child is turning 26. When do they lose coverage and what are their options?

A guide to transitioning dependents off family plans at age 26.

Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), adult children can remain on a parent's health insurance plan until December 31st of the year they turn 26 (or the exact birth month, depending on state law and plan rules).

Losing coverage on a parent's plan is considered a Qualifying Life Event that triggers a 60-day Special Enrollment Period. This allows your child to enroll in their own marketplace plan or transition to employer-sponsored coverage if available.
